I can’t believe it!  I am robbed!

Don’t worry about me. I’m safe and sound. In fact, it’s nothing too serious, but I do feel sad and angry about it. If you are curious about my experience and have enough patience, read on, and then you will draw your conclusion.

About a week ago, I wrote an article and put it on my blog as usual with satisfaction. And also as usual, I sent it to all my friends, hoping that they would tell me how they thought about it, because I valued their opinions. One of them, who always thinks highly of my articles and urges me to get them published on newspapers, volunteered to help me to become famous. He had a friend, who is a reporter working for a local newspaper, and he believed through him there wouldn’t be any trouble in this matter. True to his word, soon a reporter contacted me, saying that he had received my article and the chief editor thought it was a very good one. They would publish it as soon as possible. The only trouble was that the article was not long enough to cover the whole page, so they wanted to interview me and get more detailed information. I told them that I agreed to be interviewed on condition that the article should be published anonymously and no photos of mine should be printed on the newspaper. Of course they said there would be no problem.

The next day, the reporter came. I invited him to the bar for a cup of coffee and it would be more pleasant to do the interview there. You see, this is the first time I have got an interview! We talked quite pleasantly for two hours and I could see that the information I provided made him satisfied. Before he left, he promised to send me his written report and asked me to correct it for him. And I thought I was obliged to do so for him.

Everything went just as we had planned. I received the report, corrected it carefully (it was not very well written, and his imagination and exaggeration made me very uncomfortable. Considering his young age and completely without my experiences, I corrected only a few places so that I wouldn’t hurt his feelings)  sent it back to him and told him to go ahead with the work.

Yesterday afternoon, worried that he might not have received my letter, I sent him a message. His reply was quick and short: “Got it.” Yesterday evening, my friend sent me an email, expressing his great indignation to the reporter. He found the guy had borrowed my idea and published HIS article on the newspaper and mine was nowhere to be found! He said it was one of the most disgusting things he had ever known.

No! I just can’t believe it. But what could I do? I am robbed of a lot of things:

1.     1. the good feelings and impression on newspaper reporters;

2.     2. the time and effort I put into writing the good article;

3.    3.  the time and effort I spent on the interview and the correction of the report;

4.     4. my kindness of treating him to a cup of coffee.

So, you see, in the end I got nothing but sadness. He is so clever, while I am like a fool. From this experience, I have learned a lesson: Never trust a reporter.
